Task: Thoroughly test complex gyros that would be used to stabilize earth-orbiting satellites
A system capable of testing gyros over lengthy time periods in both both ambient and thermal vacuum environments was needed. The system required the ability to transmit, receive, and analyze a wide variety of digital and analog signals. It also had to operate at a speed that pushed the envelope of existing technologies.
The Product:
The product developed executed over 50 automated tests selectable from a menu, continuously recorded over 100 test parameters, and shut the gyro being tested down if parameters exceeded specified values. In order to satisfy the stringent speed requirement placed on the system, a form of programming in which special assembly language instructions are created was used for code that ran thousands of times each second.
The Result:
The project was so successful that the development of a system for simultaneously testing multiple gyros was immediately authorized.
